In 2000, a patron of the Triage Shelter by the name of Ray Ray Smiles handed Dame Susie Meister a beautiful hand painted picture. This picture was a thank you, his way of giving back to the Dames for their kindness and generosity. For many years the Dames would put on a BBQ at TRIAGE, an east Vancouver transition house for the homeless in the downtown eastside. It was a wonderful BBQ, a feast for all to enjoy, with music and laughter and goodie bags for everyone to take away. They provided chicken, salmon, beef, salads, breads, fruit and more for 800 to 1000 people on a day in August. It was a huge success, a lot of work and a lot of reward.
The heartfelt art inspired what is now the Above And Beyond Award which is shared annually with the one Dame who has made a significant difference in achieving the goals of our Chapter. This member may have shown incredible leadership, support or mentoring. She may have worked above all others to make sure an event went off without a hitch. Perhaps she made sacrifices, took on extra responsibilities, and lent an unwavering hand upholding the vision of the Les Dames D’Escoffier BC Chapter. Each year this award is given to a different member, and every year Ray’s beautiful painting is displayed in a new home with a new Dame.
