About The Muses Dinner at Market by Jean-Georges
Vancouver’s arts enthusiasts are in for a treat at the Vancouver Art Gallery, as it introduces Picasso: The Artist and His Muses, from 11 June to 2 October 2016. As the hotel partner for this milestone exhibition, Shangri-La Hotel, Vancouver is celebrating Picasso’s bold innovations, and similar to the exhibition, looking beyond the artist to the six women who influenced his life and art. Market by Jean-Georges is presenting a series of inspired dinner tasting menus, titled The Muses Dinner.
At the Summerdine dinner on August 10, the focus will be on one of Picasso’s great loves and well-known muses – Marie-Therese Walter. The dinner has been dubbed “A Surrealist Affair”.
According to legend, forty-five-year-old Picasso and seventeen year old Marie-Thérèse Walter met outside Galeries Lafayette in Paris in 1927. Picasso, then still married to Olga, was fascinated by Marie-Thérèse’s Greek profile, encouraging him to return to his earlier studies of classicism and to create the iconic nose silhouette so often associated with his young lover. In 1935 Marie-Thérèse gave birth to their daughter Maya, and by 1936 she had lost her status as Picasso’s preferred mistress.
