SCHOLARSHIPS 2018
Ceri Barlow
Ceri is passionate about food and beverage and the people that create these products. She is an active member of her Victoria community and has raised many funds for farmers, food producers and food education on Vancouver Island. Her goal is to never stop learning and to be influential in igniting similar passions in others.
Madeline Beaumont
Madeline has always loved baking and cooking. She has been doing both (successfully says her family) from a very early age. Over the last few years her culinary repertoire has expanded to include several plant-based and gluten free options. Madeline will be attending the Northwest Culinary Academy this fall and she could not be more excited!
Alix Berrington
Raised in the Okanagan, Alix has always had an appreciation for the wine industry. From running tasting bars to hosting wine tours throughout the Okanagan, she enjoys all aspects of the industry. Alix aspires to continue her wine education with a focus in wine-making and viticulture.
Eliana Bray
Eliana is very passionate about the wine industry; she has toured extensively through the local wine regions and loves to learn about the terroir of each micro-climate and how it is translated by each winery. She hopes to add a global perspective with the WSET Diploma Level 4.
Jenna Brisco
Jenna joined Café Medina in 2013 where, in just two months, she became the indispensable second-in-command to owner Robbie Kane as their General Manager. Jenna will be using her scholarship to complete the VinItaly International Italian Wine Ambassador Certification Course in Verona, Italy.
Ann Brydle
Ann has worked in the liquor retail industry for five years, growing and sharing her passion for wine. Her education includes Court of Master Sommeliers, French and Italian Wine Scholar, ISG Level 2, and WSET Level 3. She is excited to start the next step in her adventure with the WSET Level 4 Diploma.
Jennifer Carter
Since moving to Vancouver, Jennifer has completed her WSET 3 and the Italian Wine Scholar program while putting it to practical use at Kitsilano Wine Cellar. During this time Jennifer has discovered a love of writing and is excited to learn more so she can share her passion for wine, food and travel with those around her.
Monique Cheung
After years as a commercial photographer shooting highly-stylized foods, Monique went off to Italy in search of authenticity and provenance in our modern food system. While there, she obtained her Master’s degree in Communications at Slow Food’s University of Gastronomic Sciences. She’s returned home to continue her education in food and wine, and hopes to continue advocating for dedicated producers who grow and produce ethically and sustainably.
Megan Dodds
Megan is in her second year of the Hospitality Managment Degree program and is thoroughly enjoying her time at Vancouver Island University. She loves travel and work with people which is why she is pursuing a career in the hospitality field. This summer Megan will be achieving a life long dream of working at Walt Disney World in Florida.
Aman Dosanj
Aman jumped over the pond in 2008. Known for her tireless curiosity, endless experiments and collaborations with chefs across the Okanagan, the self-taught cook was named Western Living Magazine’s top 10 ‘Foodie of the Year’ 2015 and will appear in ‘From The Wild’ S4. The edible storyteller shares stories about how food connects us during pop up dinners in unexpected places.
Anna Eroujenets
Anna has been a part of the management team at Forage restaurant in Vancouver for three years. In her free time you can find her at a farmer’s market, a Growing Chefs! classroom or “doing research” on the Vancouver restaurant scene. With the help of Les Dames, she plans to become a professional oenophile and promote what’s dear to her heart, BC wines!
Morgan Franz
Morgan will be using her scholarship toward the Italian Culinary Arts program at George Brown College.
Scarlet Gaffney
Scarlet excelled in the Culinary Arts Program at VCC and was administrator for Culinary Team Canada 2005-2008. After apprenticing with Four Seasons and Fairmont, she worked at Crave Restaurant then joined Fairmont Chateau Whistler as Sous Chef through the 2010 Winter Olympics. After career stops in Boston and Toronto, she joined the faculty at VCC in 2013 and currently delivers the ACE-it Culinary Arts Program at Carson Graham Secondary in North Vancouver.
Christina Hartigan
Christina is a Sommelier at Botanist. After working a harvest in Burgundy, she developed a keen interest in wine. This curiosity, paired with her love for the hospitality industry, led her to the role of sommelier. She has completed the WSET Diploma, French Wine Scholar, and is a CMS Certified Sommelier. Christina greatly appreciates the support of the Dames d’Escoffier in her pursuit of the Italian Wine Scholar.
Esther Huang
Esther is a clinical dietitian by day and server at Fable in Vancouver by night. She is passionate about all things concerning food and wine, as well as fostering good relationships around food, nutrition, and wellness. She is excited to start her WSET 2 to enhance her wine knowledge and service!
Sharon Janzen
From selling baking out of the trunk of her car to local businesses, to achieving the Vendor of the Year award at the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market, Sharon has created a viable business as Alderlane Farmhouse Bakery. Desiring new products, she plunged into teaching herself the art of laminated pastries. This year, travelling to France with the Vancouver Island University Baking Program was the trip of a lifetime to taste, touch and experience the ultimate croissant.
Holly Jezovit
Holly will be taking her Sommelier Level 1 with her scholarship.
Courtenay Kohlhauser
Courtenay cooks seasonally with Joy Road Catering working with local farmers and winemakers to highlight the region’s bounty. She spends winters baking and skiing in the mountains at Monashee Powder Snowcats. Catering in the summers provides many opportunities for learning within the wine industry and she is very excited to be continuing her wine education with WinePlus+ WSET Level 2.
Erin Korpisto
After a career in architecture, Erin switched to wine in 2009, now working for Liquidity Wines, and teaching wine studies at Okanagan College. She loves to travel – typically to one wine region or another, expanding her knowledge of different varietals, wine styles and terroir, usually with glass in hand.
Ester Lai
Currently a student at Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts, Ester is passionate about engaging and captivating others through food. With her dedication and eye for detail she is always striving to provide top quality dishes. She values the importance of establishing strong relationships with everyone from local food suppliers to reputable chefs. One day she hopes she will be able to share her joy of good food in her own bistro in multicultural Vancouver.
Rebecca Leyva
Rebecca will be using her scholarship to attend the FAB workshop for women in the hospitatlity industry in Charleston.
Kristi Linneboe
Kristi’s career in the hospitality industry began in the same way it does for many people — by working late nights and long weekends in restaurants and bars to help put herself through school. After a stint travelling, she worked at Chef Angus An’s award-winning Maenam for five years, where she quickly rose in the ranks from bar manager to wine director and finally, restaurant manager. In 2016, she joined the team at L’Abattoir to oversee the cellar.
Valerie Logan
Valerie is a second year Hospitality student at Vancouver Island University. She is passionate about working in the food and beverage industry. Valerie aspires to finish her Degree program at VIU and is working toward her career goal of a position in Human Resources Management. She believes a strong work culture is the key to a successful business.
Melissa Lu
Melissa was first introduced to the world of wine while living in Vancouver. She completed her WSET Level 2 with PICA last year and is very excited to continue WSET Level 3 education with PICA and learn more about the fascinating aspects of food and wine pairing.
Yolanda MacLaren
Yolanda has worked in the industry for years and is forwarding her career to start her own company. She is a talented artistic cook with an eye for exciting flavours and visual appeal. She strives to learn as much as she can and loves to learn new techniques and styles.
Brianna McKeage
Brianna is a WSET 3 Certified Sommelier as well as an apprentice winemaker and entrepreneur. Currently enrolled at UC Davis for her Winemaking Certificate, Brianna is focused on her passion for Vancouver Island Pinot Noir and Sparkling Wine. She has future goals to complete a Master’s degree to further her knowledge and career in the world of wine.
Jeanette Montgomery
After years of corporate life in Vancouver, Jeannette moved to the Okanagan Valley to explore freelance writing. Over the last decade she has worked in and around the BC wine industry, from tasting rooms to the crush pad and cellar floor, learning and sharing the stories within. Jeannette will use this scholarship for French Wine Scholar studies, giving her context to better understand and write more meaningfully about BC wine.
Rina Nand
Rina’s love for food and wine come from her working as a Commis Chef and Bartender. Music and travel are her other passions and she hopes to combine them all into a career one day. Rina aspires to be the female version of Anthony Bourdain.
Kristina Neilsen
Krissy followed her passion for wine from Toronto to the Okanagan in 2011. She’s worked in the wine industry ever since. Once settled in Summerland, Krissy sought out the first WEST course she could and is very excited (and scared) to pursue the Diploma this year.
Anna Neufeld
Anna is an enthusiastic life-long learner who is passionate about promoting health through nutrition. She is completing a BSc in Human Nutrition at St. Francis Xavier University and is pursuing a career in dietetics. She looks forward to using her education to facilitate healthy changes for people and communities.
Hannah Partridge
Hannah wants to combine her love of baking, artistic skills and her interpersonal strengths in a creative and fulfilling way by attending the Pastry Arts Program at SAIT. Eventually, she would like to become a culinary instructor and share her love of baking with others.
Katie Phelan
Living in Italy for seven years, Katie wrote and taught graduate and postgraduate courses in Italian food culture and environmental sustainability. Since moving to Vancouver Island, she has been enthusiastically eating and drinking her way around the Pacific Northwest. Typically, you will find her at Beaufort Winery in the Comox Valley effusing about volatile aromatic compounds and the virtues of Blattner hybrids in cooler climates!
Jenna Pillon
Jenna is the Chef de Cuisine at Terrafina at Hester Creek By RauDZ in Oliver. She is so grateful to Les Dames d’Escoffier, BC Chapter, and Cacao Barry for such an amazing opportunity. She is looking forward to sharing the knowledge she learns at the Chocolate Academy with her team and continuing to have fun with food.
Trish Price
Trish’s scholarship will allow her to further pursue her WSET education at PICA.
Stephanie Sketchley
Stephanie is an anthropologist and has been studying chocolate for nine years. She works at The Chocolate Project in Victoria and is co-founder of Uncouth Chocolate, a small bean-to-bar chocolate company in Victoria. She will be attending the FCCI’s Cacao Grader Intensive with the scholarship from Les Dames d’Escoffier.
Juliana Tomaselli
Julianna is a passionate hospitality management student who will be completing her Bachelor Degree in 2020. She wants to pursue a career in Event Management or Human Resources. She loves the industry and is excited for future opportunities she will receive.
Jackie Van Vliet
Jackie is the wine club and events manager at Fort Berens Estate Winery in Lillooet. She has over 10 years of experience in events and hospitality and has always had a love and appreciation for wine. Now working in the wine industry, she finds that the more she learns about wine, the more she wants to know. Jackie will be taking the Sommelier 1 course in Vancouver this spring.
Frances von Aesch
Frances has been a Sommelier for seventeen years. Most of this was at Zambri’s in Victoria where she honed her food and wine pairing skills nightly and at her monthly wine dinners. In 2017 she moved to Charelli’s where she has applied her passion to the world of cheese.
Madison Whale
Madison is a grape farmer living in Naramata. She is inspired by those around her making wine that pays homage to the vineyard and believes in a future that includes cherishing land as a priority in grape growing. Madison will continue to take a biodynamic farming course with the Biodynamic Association in hopes to farm more responsibly and help educate her community.
Ariana White
Ariana is the butcher for Timber restaurant in Vancouver. She loves everything food-related, with a special fondness for butchery and charcuterie. Her family inspires her every day to do her very best.
Barb Wild
Barb is the “Good Wine Gal”. Her goal is to inspire you to love wine as much as she does. She dreams of creating a business that helps connect people with wine through education, tastings and travel. Most days, you can find her in the wine department at Legacy Liquor Store.
Liliya Zhekova
Liliya is PICA Baking and Pastry Arts Alumni, passionate to create cakes and petit fours. As a second-time scholarship recipient, she is excited to continue her education attending the Chocolate Program at the Pastry Training Centre of Vancouver with the help of Les Dames d’Escoffier in achieving her dream to open her own pastry boutique in the future.
