Robynn Baijius
After a decade of working in administration, Robynn is finally following her dreams of feeding people good food by taking the Culinary Arts program at Vancouver Island University. Fueled by a passion for sustainability and the slow movement, she is thrilled to finally be able to learn everything she can about her first love: food. She is also very interested in continuing her education into baked goods and delicious treats and confections.
Audrey Boulianne
Audrey is currently a culinary Student at Northwest Culinary Academy of Vancouver. Born in Montreal, she has a background in Finance and Marketing and decided, 5 years ago, it wasn’t her calling. She has worked in the culinary industry ever since; from waitress to cook on private yachts. In the hope of achieving new objectives, she hopes this professional training will help her grow and succeed in Vancouver’s beautiful food scene.
Ann Brydle
Ann is a passionate wine professional with a long history working in liquor retail. She shares her knowledge as Educator for Cascadia Liquor and Vendor Manager for the Victoria Wine Festival. She is currently studying for the WSET Level 4 Diploma.
Isabel Chung
Isabel is a passionate culinarian who believes that learning should never stop. In her current role as Executive Chef of Fairmont Chateau Whistler, she oversees the creative and strategic initiatives of all culinary operations of the 528-room luxury landmark resort including the Grill Room, the Wildflower Restaurant; the Mallard Lounge, Portobello Market & Fresh Bakery, The Chalet, offering alpine cuisine throughout the winter season, and The Clubhouse, as well as In Room Dining and Banquets.
Reba DeGuevara
Reba’s scholarship will go toward the 1-year dual diploma at the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts. She is excited to spend time immersed in this craft. Previously, she completed her undergraduate studies at UBC. She values practices that ensure food resources are healthy, ethical and sustainable. She strives to ensure that her involvement in community reflects her passions and values as a Syilx (Okanagan) woman.
Samantha Elkiw
After many years of putting off school to raise her young family Samantha plans on using her scholarship to help pay for her Culinary arts program. After 15 years of cooking for local restaurants and B&Bs, she is ready to hone her skills and carry on with the finer things in dinning. Studying close to home at Vancouver Island University, Samantha plans to have place of her own one day, sharing amazing food with locals from her small town.
Anna Eroujenets
Anna never thought she would work at a restaurant, but after a friend introduced her to the industry 8 years ago, she has never looked back. By continuing her wine education with the help of Les Dames and Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts, she plans to support younger generations of women and try as many wines as humanly possible.
Vanessa Fraguas
Vanessa has been inspired by the Pacific Northwest from a young age. She has a passion for local ingredients and the importance of sustainability. Vanessa worked at Petes Meat for five years learning the importance and responsibility of nose to tail butchery. She is excited and grateful to receive the Service Excellence Scholarship in honour of Tina Fineza. This will allow her to experience and learn about the humane treatment of animals at Two River Meats.
Mara Hanneson
Mara is passionate about all aspects of the food and wine industry. Along with her career in restaurants, she has worked in retail, gardens, and vineyards. She is a Certified Sommelier, with the Court of Master Sommeliers. In addition to this, her education includes ISG2, WSET3, and French Wine Scholar. Mara is excited to use this scholarship to continue her education in this exciting field!
Cathryn Kissinger
Cathryn works as the pastry chef at Toque Catering in Victoria. She enjoys working in the dynamic work environment where everyday is different from the last. It is also a place that has encouraged her continued passion for all things pastry. She is excited to return to the city of her alma mater to participate in a plated desserts course taught by Ghaya F. Oliveira.
Erin Korpisto
Erin is an Okanagan girl who decided to move back to the Valley and pursue her passion for wine. Erin started in the cellar as an assistant winemaker, before moving into the Sales and Marketing side of the industry. She shares her extensive knowledge and passion for the wines of B.C. teaching wine studies at Okanagan College, and through her work as the Sales & Marketing Manager at Stag’s Hollow Winery in OK Falls. She is part way through her WSET Diploma studies in London, England.
Jessica Mann
Jessica has pursued her passion for food and knowledge from a young age. She studied Culinary Arts at VIU, then completed a degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management at the University of Guelph. She went on to developed her culinary skills in kitchens all over BC and Europe. She returned to VIU in 2012 to become a teacher, now she shares her knowledge and passion for food with young aspiring chefs in Campbell River. She will attend the Cacao Barry Chocolate institute in Montreal.
Celia McBride
Celia McBride lives in Victoria, BC and has been passionate about food her entire life. She completed her International Sommelier Guild diploma in 2010, followed by courses through the Court of Master Sommeliers and the Wine Scholar Guild. This year she is bolstering her knowledge of all things distilled through the Certified Specialist of Spirits course through the Society of Wine Educators. She works as a restaurant sommelier and loves elevating guest experiences with the perfect beverage.
Rachel McKinley
Rachel McKinley is a chocolate and confectionery professional with 15 years experience. Rachel began her career by studying microbiology and biochemistry, where she became fascinated by chocolate crystallization and sugar behaviour. She decided to pursue chocolate and has owned her own business (CocoaNymph) and currently teaches at Ecole Chocolat Professional School of Chocolate Arts and is the head chocolatier at Purdys Chocolatier.
Taylor Meier
Taylor has a deep love for baking. Recently being diagnosed with a dairy allergy, she would love to incorporate dairy-free baking into her skill set and red seal training. Taylor will use this scholarship to save for her goals.
Michaela Morris
Michaela Morris is an international wine writer, educator, judge and speaker based in Vancouver. She writes for Decanter magazine and Meininger’s Wine Business International as well as Canadian publications Taste and Quench. Michaela was a Les Dames d’Escoffier scholarship recipient in 2004 which helped fund her WSET Diploma studies. She is now in the second stage of the Master of Wine programme and this year’s scholarship will provide a huge contribution towards the tuition fees.
Mandy Newcomb
Mandy’s passion for food began at a young age. She attended CNC and Pacific Institute, worked in the industry for 20+ years and continues to learn each day so she may pass that knowledge along to her students where she instructs at her alumnus school.
Diana-Lynn Newson
Diana Newson, born and raised on Vancouver Island, was instilled at a young age with an appetite for adventure, a respect for ingredients and a deep appreciation for the BC Coast. She loves to bring people together and enjoys utilizing food as a canvas for education, good times and nourishing those around her. She plans to use her scholarship to follow her passion and chase a deeper understanding of the Culinary Arts at the Northwest Culinary Academy of Vancouver.
Ronnie Nugent
Ronnie is an assistant instructor at VCC. She has over 15 years experience in cooking. She apprenticed at Crave restaurant and Marriott pinnacle hotel. Ronnie plans to become an instructor one day and will further her education by taking the Professional Instructors Diploma Program.
Laura Pereira
Laura has committed whole heartedly to creating a life rich in moments of creativity, beauty and connection. As a Professional Cook Laura seeks to connect with natures greatest gifts while creating nourishing moments of joy for others. Laura is interested in creating a more ethical cooking culture by addressing both food waste and mental-health wellness for cooks. With her scholarship, Laura will be returning to her roots by attending a week of cooking courses in Portugal.
Shiva Reddy
As “Wine Boss” at Como Taperia, Shiva Reddy curates a wild mix of sherry, wines, ciders and beyond. She has worked for some of Vancouver’s best teams such as, Boulevard, Royal Dinette, Hawksworth and PICA. Shiva has completed the Court of Master Sommeliers Level 1 and 2, her WSET Level 1-3 and is currently working on Level 4. She hopes to intersect wine with media and to one day own and operate her own business in hospitality.
Charlene Rooke
Charlene Rooke is a Vancouver-based journalist and trained artisan distiller who is now building a career as a spirits expert and educator. Already the lead judge of the Canadian Artisan Spirit Competition and a panelist and writer for Canada’s 50 Best Bars, she is using her scholarship funds to become one of the first WSET Spirits Educators in B.C. She looks forward to teaching the next generation of spirits geeks.
Samantha Ross
Samantha is the Wine Director at Coquille Restaurant in Gastown. Since moving to Vancouver and breaking into its restaurant scene in 2015, she has fallen in love with and greatly pursued wine education. She is a CMS Certified Sommelier and has completed WSET Level 3 as well as French Wine Scholar. With the help of Les Dames, Samantha will continue her education with Italian Wine Scholar.
Amy Russel
Amy will be using her scholarship to attend the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts 6 month culinary arts Diploma program. Currently Amy is a fitness leader professional. With her education from PICA, Amy will combine her love of both food and fitness in pursuit of inspiring others to take ownership of their health, in both the gym and kitchen.
Sharlyn So
It seems as though school just never ends for Sharlyn. She is a huge advocate of learning. She has a psychology degree and a Food Nutrition and Health degree from UBC, culinary diploma from Dubrulle and her Red seal from VCC. She was fortunate to work with some of the best Chefs in the city. She plans to attend the Canadian school of Natural Nutrition where she hopes to combine her nutrition knowledge and culinary skills, to help educate others about proper nutrition and cooking techniques.
Tabatha Stahl
“Growing up in the wilds of Williams Lake, B.C., Tabatha spent her formative years learning how to grow and harvest produce, butcher livestock and create meals with family and friends. After graduating from culinary school in 2007, Tabatha moved to Vancouver to be part of its vibrant culinary scene. Tabatha is now working towards her goal of becoming a Culinary Arts instructor.

Ysabel Sukic
Ysabel’s culinary roots run deep with a mom who owned a cake shop and restaurant in the Philippines, a godmother who is a baker, and a great aunt who was a cooking instructor. Her last twenty years span an interesting career, working in many different aspects of the culinary world including a stint as chef on a luxury yacht. Ysabel loves teaching and is always expanding her knowledge to share with others. Her current goals are to achieve her Cake Decorating and Chocolate Training Certificates.
Madison Tani
Madi has always had a passion for cooking and baking. After spending some time in Vancouver working under chefs, she ventured to Tofino to learn more about the west coast wild life and sourcing locally. Madi is eager to always be learning and is excited to use the scholarship she received to learn more about butchery.
Kimberley Vy
Baking and pastry has been an integral component of Kimberley’s life allowing her to express her artistic creativity. With 12 years experience, she is now Pastry Chef at Inn at Laurel Point in Victoria. She is inspired by women who are driven to succeed paving the way for others to follow. After attending The B Concept by Jordi Bordas, she hopes to provide gourmet healthy alternatives for those with dietary/allergy restrictions, increasing inclusivity within the Vancouver Island community.
